Dental implants are devices that replace the roots of missing teeth. Most of the dental implant surgeries are successful, and there are few steps of precaution and care you can follow post-surgery for quick and effective healing of your surgical site.

• Medication – Your dentist provides you with a prescription of antibiotics and pain killers to aid the healing process and relieve the pain and swelling. These must be followed regularly for the prescribed amount of time for proper recovery.
• Smoking – This needs to be completely avoided till the wound has healed, as smoking severely limits the healing in mouth.
• Swelling and/or bleeding – These are normal occurrences after surgery. The swelling reaches its peak in 2-3 days. To minimize swelling apply ice pack on the cheek of the surgery area. A little bleeding is also normal after surgery, but if the bleeding it too much, bite down hard on a gauge for an hour.
• Diet – Until the local anesthetic wears off drink only cold fluids. Eat only soft foods and plenty of liquids on the day of the surgery. Hard food substances should be avoided till the implant is completely healed.
• Physical activity – Limit any strenuous activities on the day of surgery (like gym or exercise). For 1 or 2 days take rest and keep your head up.
• Appointments – Schedule your follow up appointment at Focus Dental Care Clinic and keep your regular checkups on track to avoid any hindrance in effective healing and maintenance.
• Oral hygiene – Successful oral surgery depends on keeping the mouth as clean as possible. Brush your remaining teeth normally, just avoid the implant site for first few days. Later use a soft bristle brush gently for good cleaning. Hot saltwater mouthwashes (1 cup water and 1 teaspoon of salt) are very relieving and good for healing in the first few days.You can repeat it 4-5 times a day.
• Prosthesis – If you have any prosthesis or dentures covering the implant site, do not wear them for a few days.
