What Is Flap Surgery for Gums?
Flap surgery for gums is performed to treat severe gum disease called Periodontitis(a gum disease). Periodontitis causes irreversible damage to gums and the area surrounding the affected teeth.
Why Is It Performed?
Flap surgery is performed in cases where Scaling and Root planing, Curettage, Antibiotics failed to treat Periodontitis.
SYMPTOMS OF PERIODONTITIS
- Swollen, red bleeding gums.
- Bad breath (Halitosis)
- Gaps between the teeth.
- If a change in the fit of a denture or bridge (if any present) occurs.
- The detachment between gums and tooth surfaces (Pockets) deeper than three millimeters is diagnostic for gum disease.
- Pus at the gum line.
- Tooth mobility
- Exposed roots
How Is It Performed?
A Periodontist performs the Flap surgery.
- Periodontist administers anesthesia around the area where they are going to operate.
- The periodontist reflects the section of your gums in the affected area, cleans the roots of your teeth, and repairs the damaged bone if needed.
- The bone may be smoothed and reshaped to reduce further plaque growth.
- The bone may be Repaired (grafted) with bone from another part of the body or with artificial materials to help the bone grow back.
- The gum flap will be sutured back into place and covered with gauze to stop the bleeding.
- If needed, periodontal dressing is placed at the surgical site, removed after one week following Flap surgery.
Care After Flap Surgery?
- Immediately after Flap surgery, you might experience bleeding for the first 24 hours. If bleeding occurs, apply pressure gently.
- Take medications as prescribed.
- Avoid smoking
- Avoid hot beverages for 2 to 3 days, take soft and cold foods.
- Do not use a straw for drinking cold drinks.
- Continue to brush and floss twice daily.
Do attend your follow-up visits to your dentist every six months following flap surgery.
